Commemorative Flag Unfurled

Attention: open in a new window. PrintE-mail

The City of Forest Grove proudly unfurled the American flag at its new location on Wednesday, April 22, 2009. The flag and pole was donated to the City by a private citizen who wished to give something back to the community that had supported his business and family for many years, as well as to honor our Country and those who have served or are serving in the armed forces.

The flag was hoisted for one day to inspect the flag and test the pole mechanisms while the contractor was onsite. Many phone calls were received throughout the day and the next day from citizens expressing their pride and approval of the flag. The most common phrase used by callers to describe their feelings and reaction to the flag was “Awesome”.

The following questions have been raised in regards to the flag:

Is the pole big enough for the size of flag? The pole and concrete base was designed and approved by a registered engineer and is structurally sound.

Who will pay for the replacement flags? Local service clubs, with Forest Grove Rotary leading the way, will raise funds for any repair or replacement costs.

How much City staff time will be dedicated to the flag? It takes approximately 10 minutes to raise and lower the flag for repairs or replacement. The Forest Grove Fire Department will be responsible for lowering the flag to half staff when needed.

What about lighting costs? The lighting system and installation was included in the donation of the flag and flag pole. The lights will become part of the street lighting system.

What else is planned for the green space? The next phase for the flag area involves the City working with service clubs to add landscaping to the green space similar to what is done at other public right-of-way areas.

As soon as the lighting system is installed, the flag will be proudly displayed for all citizens and visitors to enjoy.
