Check out the 2007 Oregon Fire Code OnlineBy following this link you can access the 2007 Oregon Fire Code. This link can be a great tool for your fire code questions, but can be difficult to understand if you are not familiar with the document. Before making any changes to your business please contact our Fire Marshal's Office regarding your questions and our staff will gladly assist you with ensuring that safety is considered as you make changes. Also, please be aware that the City of Forest Grove has adopted specific standards for fire hydrants that are not a part of the code listed on that page.
Current News from the Fire Prevention Division:Fire sprinkler systems can save your life, home, and property A recent home fire in rural Forest Grove proved the importance of a home fire sprinkler system. A fire in your home can double in size every minute, and regardless of if you live in a rural area, or a city sub-division, there is no denying that residential fire sprinkler systems are the most effective option to protect your loved ones and your property. The $300,000 dollar home did not have a fire sprinkler system and was destroyed by a fast moving fire. Luckily the smoke alarms worked and allowed the occupants the chance to escape, but all of their possesions were destroyed. Smoke alarms are an important safety tool that will help protect your family, but they to don't take action to control the fire like a sprinkler system will. Had this home been protected by a fire sprinkler system firefighters would have only been called to help remove the small amount of water the sprinkler system used to extinguish the fire and the home and all of the family possesions would still be there today. To install a residential fire sprinkler system in your home a plumber can use the same pipe that is used for your toilets, sinks, and showers to add sprinklers to your ceilings or walls. Modern residential sprinkler heads are designed with beauty in mind, and include decorative covers that match your paint to hide the sprinkler head until it needs to operate. Often times the cost of adding a fire sprinkler system to a new home is estimated to be the same cost as installing new carpet. To have an existing home retrofitted with a fire sprinkler system is slightly more. The type of fire sprinkler system that is installed in homes is not like the ones that are shown in Hollywood movies. Each residential sprinkler head is heat activated and they function one at a time, often controlling the fire with one or two sprinkler heads operating. They will not go off just because your smoke alarm goes off, and they do not all go off at once. They require little to no maintenance, have been found to almost never fail or leak, and flow small amounts of water compared to the amount of water that a fire hose will put out. There is no doubt about it, fire sprinkler systems work, they save lives, property, and possesions and are the best thing you can do to protect what you cherish most.
