Children’s Day / Book Day at the Library
Celebrate on Friday, April 29th, at the Forest Grove City Library from 10 a.m. to noon! Door prizes, craft activities, refreshments, and entertainment will be featured for this celebration of bilingual literacy for children of all ages and their families. The date is a no-school day in the Forest Grove School District.
From 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m., crafts and activities will be offered for children up to age 14. Every child who visits during that time will receive a free paperback book of their choice. The Mid-City Breakers break-dancing troupe will perform from 11:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Refreshments and door prizes will follow the performance.
The event is funded by contributions from The Friends of the Library, a nonprofit volunteer organization, and All Together Now. Bilingual staff and volunteers will be on hand to assist visitors in both English and Spanish. Members of Adelante Chicas, from Forest Grove High School, will be providing much of the volunteer support.
Children’s Day/ Book Day (Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros) is observed nationally on or around April 30th. In 1997, a literacy initiative was introduced through a collaboration involving schools, libraries and community organizations. Teachers and librarians across the country joined together to celebrate childhood and bilingual literacy using the traditional Latin American celebration “El Día del Niño” (April 30th) as the vehicle to highlight the importance of honoring children and promoting bilingual literacy. REFORMA (The National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish speaking) and the National Association of Bilingual Education (NABE) also joined the effort to assist in promoting this initiative as an annual event.
This will be the sixth year Forest Grove City Library has participated. The Library is located at 2114 Pacific Avenue in Forest Grove. Questions about this event can be directed to librarian, Linda Stiles Taylor, at (503) 992-3247.
