Community Invited to Participate in Earth Week Events
National Earth Day - April 22, 2011:
Mayor Peter Truax and the Forest Grove City Council urge all students and all community members of all ages to participate in the special Earth Day events planned throughout the month of April.
On April 22, 1970, twenty million Americans, led by students, look to the streets in protest of the rampant pollution throughout the country. Together, these men and women gave birth to the modern environmental movement. As a result, the U. S. government responded by establishing U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and passing the first generation of environmental protections including Clean Air and Water Acts and the Endangered Species Act. Today, the global community now faces extraordinary challenges, such as environmental degradation, climate change, food and water shortages, and global health issues. Earth Day is the perfect platform for elected officials and students to re-ignite the environmental concerns of the nation, teach new audiences about climate and clean energy, and address environment concerns. In celebration of Earth Day's 41st Anniversary, Pacific University student leaders and peers are organizing events that will unite their campus around individual acts of green and alter their community's perception of the environment for a more sustainable future.
The Forest Grove City Council hereby pledges this Earth Day, April 22, 2011, to support environmental initiatives in our city and to encourage others to undertake similar actions. Mayor Truax signed a proclamation at the City Council meeting on April 11.
