Forest Grove Uncorked to Benefit Police Internet Child Abuse Enforcement
The City Club of Forest Grove presents the 3rd Annual Forest Grove Uncorked on Saturday, August 20, 2011, from 4 to 9 p.m. This downtown event promotes and celebrates the food, wine and micro-brew providers of our local communities and supports a local charity. This year as participants listen to live music and experience the local cuisine and beverages, they will be helping to detect and prevent internet child pornography.
The investigation of internet child pornography requires specialized technological equipment, software and training. Funds raised through 2011 Forest Grove Uncorked will allow the Forest Grove Police Department to purchase the equipment needed to effectively investigate and prosecute internet child pornography cases and other sexual crimes against children involving the internet.
Child pornography traded over the internet is a growing problem. There are estimated to be more than one million pornographic images of children on the Internet, with 200 new images posted daily. It has been reported that a single child pornography site receives a million hits in a month.
Local police play a major role in detecting and preventing Internet child pornography offenses. One study found that 56 percent of arrests for Internet child pornography crimes originated from local law enforcement agencies. In fact, in the most recent investigation conducted by the Forest Grove Police Department with assistance from the Interagency Child Exploitation Prevention Team, or INTERCEPT, detectives seized computer discs and hard drives found to contain over 1600 images and videos depicting known child pornography from a suspect in Forest Grove. The suspect is currently facing felony charges in federal court.
