April is the month we as a community come together to celebrate Arbor Day.

Arbor Day started in 1872 with the planting of over one million trees in Nebraska.  Through the dedication of community volunteers and property owners Forest Grove has been recognized as a Tree City USA for over 20 years the Arbor Day Foundation.  As chair of the Community Forestry Commission, Mindy Laird-Garcia would like to invite you to continue the commitment to our urban forest and attend Forest Grove’s Arbor Day celebration.

This year the Arbor Day celebration will take place at Lincoln Park beginning at 9:00 AM on Saturday, April 30th.  The celebration will include a tree planting workshop sponsored by the Community Forestry Commission.  The workshop will be conducted by local arborist and Commission member David D. Hunter.

During the tree planting workshop you’ll hear about proper tree planting methods.  Commission members will also answer questions such as how deep  should I plant a tree, how often should a tree be watered and should I remove the burlap covering the root ball before planting?  There’s no cost for attending this informative workshop.

The Community Forestry Commission is a group of volunteers appointed by the Forest Grove City Council. The group’s mission is to protect the urban forest through preservation of trees and planting new trees throughout the community.  The Commission also oversees the city’s Register of Significant Trees and would like to thank those of you who placed your trees on the Register.  For those of you that don’t have trees on the register, CFC would like to encourage you to nominate your trees.   Placing your trees on the Register will help ensure their preservation now and in the future.  Trees benefit us in many ways.  Aside from their aesthetic value, trees cool homes during the summer months, slow the rate of storm water runoff and absorb carbon dioxide which is a known contributor to climate change.

Forest Grove is a special place with a strong commitment to tree preservation.   In fact, the name of our city comes from the stately grove of oak trees still standing on the campus of Pacific University.   Help us honor our heritage of tree care by celebrating Arbor Day 2011 at Lincoln Park.
