"If I Were Mayor" Contest Winners Announced

Mayor Truax is pleased to announce the winners of this year's contestwinnerssm.jpg as follows:

  • Poster – Dessa Myatt, Harvey Clarke Elementary, age 9.
  • Essay – Braden Hofeling, Neil Armstrong Middle School, age 13.
  • Video/PowerPoint – Alea Eason, home schooled, age 14 (soon to be 15).

Each winner receives a $50.00 cash prize from the City of Forest Grove and was recognized in front of the City Council at its meeting on Monday, June 13, 2011. The entries will be submitted to the state level where they will compete against other city winners for the chance of winning a laptop computer.  The winners at the state level will be announced during the Oregon Mayors Association Conference being held August 4 - 6 in Madras, Oregon.

“If I Were Mayor” 2011 Student Contest is sponsored by the Oregon Mayors Association. The contest ran from April 1 through May 31 and was advertised through the utility bill insert, City ad in the News Times, City website, City facebook, and City Scene Update. The information dessacertificatesm.jpgwas also sent to the school district for distribution.

Dessa just finished 4th grade and is very friendly and outgoing. She loves to sing and dance and is currently enrolled at FG Dance Arts. Click here to see Dessa'bradencertificatesm.jpgs poster.

Braden just finished 7th grade and is very studious and loves to read books. He was a winner in this year’s “Proud to be an American” essay contest sponsored by the Elks. Braden wants to be a marine biologist or scientist when he grows up. Click here to read Braden's essay.

aleacertificatesm.jpgAlea is very creative and interested in fashion design. She has been taking art classes for three years and has competed in the duck stamp competition receiving 2nd place twice and 3rd place once. Her video can be watched below.
