Forest Grove Police responded to a high mechanism injury crash Tuesday evening (November 15, 2011) shortly before 7:30 pm on Highway 47 just south of “B” Street.  The first arriving unit of several responding officers was Officer Troy Maslen, a 17-year veteran of the Forest Grove Police Department.  Upon running up to one of the vehicles, Officer Maslen realized one of the seriously injured drivers was his own mother, 68 year-old Lucy Maslen of Gaston.  This a first responders worst nightmare and it unfortunately became reality of one of our officers.

The two vehicles had impacted head-on with moderate to heavy damage to both vehicles with air bag deployment.  Fire crews had to use heavy extrication equipment to remove the driver of each vehicle.  Life flight transport was desired but not available due to heavy fog. Both drivers were transported by ground and entered into the trauma system at Oregon Health Sciences University with serious injuries.  The highway was closed in both directions by the Oregon Department of Transportation until after 9 pm.

Officer Maslen was taken off the call and the crash which was ultimately investigated by the Washington County Sheriff's Office.   The officer is off-duty to spend time with family and our thoughts and prayers go out for a quick recovery.
