Forest Grove Mayor Peter Truax invites Forest Grove 4th through 6th grade, junior high, high school and college students to enter the 2011 "If I Were Mayor…" Student Contest sponsored by the Oregon Mayors Association (OMA).

Mayor Truax and City Council will select one winner in each of three (3) categories: 4th – 6th Grade Poster, Junior High School Essay, or High School/College Video/PowerPoint presentation.  Applications are available at Forest Grove City Hall or online at www.forestgrove-or.gov/MayorContest. Entries must be received at Forest Grove City Hall by 5 p.m. on May 31, 2011.  Submit your original work with a completed entry form to Bev Maughan at Forest Grove City Hall, 1924 Council Street, Forest Grove, OR 97116.

The local winner in each category will be awarded $50 cash and gift certificates to local merchants and a presentation at the televised June 13 City Council meeting.  Mayor Truax will submit one winner for each category to the League of Oregon Cities (LOC) to be eligible for the statewide competition. Three statewide winners will receive lap-top computers.

Statewide recognition will be given to one winning poster, essay and video/PowerPoint and any honorable mentions as determined by the evaluation committee (Oregon Mayors Association Executive Board plus two mayors). Statewide winners and their parents will be invited to attend the OMA summer conference in Madras, on Saturday, August 6, where they will be recognized at the annual luncheon and receive their prizes.

Statewide winners will receive additional recognition:  ▪Press releases sent to local communities;▪Acknowledgment in the OMA quarterly newsletter;▪Acknowledgment in the League of Oregon Cities monthly magazine, Local Focus.

Poster and Entry Form

 

Contest Rules:
All submissions must be accompanied by a completed entry form, signed by the student's parent or guardian if under age 18. Entry forms may be photocopied.  Multiple local entries are ok. Submissions will not be returned and will become the property of Oregon Mayors Association (OMA). OMA retains the right to publish essays and posters along with the names and likenesses of each student. Prior winners are not allowed to participate. League of Oregon Cities (LOC) employees and dependents are not eligible to enter.

POSTERS
The poster contest is open to students enrolled in 4th through 6th grades or being home-schooled at the 4th through 6th grade level for the 2010-11 school year.  Poster size must be 17" x 27". Students are encouraged to be creative and may use any art medium (e.g., poster paints, felt pens, colored pencils, pastels, crayons, etc.). The poster may be in color or black and white. The student's name and daytime phone number must appear on the back of the poster.

ESSAYS
The essay contest is open to students enrolled in junior high school or being home-schooled at the junior high school level for the 2010-11 school year.   Essays must be 500 to 1,000 words in length and typed.  The student's name and daytime phone number must appear at the top of the essay.

VIDEO / POWERPOINT PRESENTATION

The video/PowerPoint contest is open to students enrolled in high school or college or being home-schooled at the high school level for the 2010-11 school year.  Presentations must be one minute in length or less. Presentations must be submitted on DVD or CD. The student's name and daytime phone number must appear on the DVD/CD.
