Red Cross Lifeguard Course
This course utilizes the blended-learning format, with 6 to 8 hours of online course work to be 100% complete prior to this in-person course. Candidates learn job skills in a swimming pool environment, with emphasis on distressed guest recognition, scanning, and equipment-based rescues.
By completing the Lifeguard certification, you will be qualified to become a lifeguard at FGAC. You will also receive CPR for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid certifications.
Prerequisites
- You must be 16 or older to begin the course.
- Must demonstrate a mature attitude.
- Pass the Water Skills Pre-Test:
- Swim 25 yards each of breaststroke and freestyle (heads-up)
- Swim 25 yards each of breaststroke and freestyle (heads-up) with a rescue tube
- Retrieve a 10-pound brick from 12 feet of water
- Tread water for one minute while holding a 10-pound brick with both hands
Certification Requirements
- Complete online course work before the first day of class.
- Attend and actively participate in all sessions (no make-up sessions).
- Participate in all water activities.
- Successfully complete all required skill testing in CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and Lifeguarding Rescue Skills.
- Score 80% on the lifeguarding written exam.
